Ninth Street Bakery - Durham, North Carolina.

Ninth St. Bakery has been baking quality, hearty breads since they fired their first oven in 1981.  They always used the finest ingredients, including organically grown flours from historic Lindley's Mill in Saxapahaw, North Carolina and started by the Lindley family around the time of the Revolutionary War!  All of their products are made from scratch using organic & unbleached flour, whole grains, stone ground flours, charcoal filtered water, unrefined sea salt, real honey, molasses, and no preservatives or harmful additives.

Carefully selected ingredients result in extraordinary bread that is always fresh and wholesome.  All breads are made with an overnight sponge process that produces a moist elastic texture, rich flavor in each loaf, and a good keeping quality. Stone-ground, organic flour makes their bread flavorful and good for you.  You can eat their bread knowing it is free from harmful pesticides, chemical fertilizers, bleaches and bromates. When you break this bread, feel assured that you are taking good care of your family and yourself. Also by supporting organic agriculture you are helping preserve the environment for us all.

Cozi Farm - Saxapahaw, North Carolina

Pasture raised Chicken and Eggs.

Cozi Farm is a diversified, thriving polyculture where animals are treated with reverence and grace, earthworms are cherished, and all critters eat a species-appropriate diet.

We offer pastured eggs from chickens fed a locally milled and organic ration, and our hens are moved to fresh pasture daily where they eat a full complement of bugs and fresh forages.

Our poultry rations contain a diversity of proteins (including flax and field peas) in order to improve the taste and nutritional profile of our products and reduce our reliance on soy. The soy in our rations are different from conventional feedstuffs in that it's derived from whole, roasted organic soybeans instead of soybean meal, an industrial waste product (processed with hexane) often fed to livestock.

The hens follow our dairy cows, goats and sheep in a rotation that takes into account the need of the grass to regenerate in order to provide the best nutrition for all the animals and to allow the soil to capture the most carbon from the atmosphere.

The Cozi Farm chickens are moved daily throughout the pastures cunsuming a diet rich in plants and bugs and fresh forages and supplimented with locally milled and organic rations containing a diversity of proteins including flax and field peas. The chickens are frozen after processing and are packed in vacuum sealed packages. All the products are natural with no added nitrates or preservatives.

Core Sound Seafood - Carteret County, North Carolina

Core Sound Seafood was started as a way to connect the fishermen of Down East Carteret County, North Carolina to a viable, local market.  Most of the fishermen that make up this coastal community have been fishing all their lives – often they can trace their fishing heritage back four or five generations. Sadly, these fishermen are increasingly leaving their life on the water as global markets, community economic loss, rising fuel prices and decreasing buying prices threaten their livelihood.

Core Sound Seafood's goal is to provide a market to these fishermen and their families by offering locally caught, fresh seafood to the Triangle community. North Carolina fishermen are a tremendous resource in our state’s diverse agricultural offerings, and including them as producers in our local food shed is vital.

To help the commercial fishing industry of North Carolina, Core Sound Seafood sets aside one dollar for every share of seafood sold and puts it into the Core Sound Seafood’s Assistance Fund for the Down East community. This assistance fund will allow them to provide financial help on an as needed basis to the commercial fishing community of North Carolina.

Fresh and local translates into delicious.  Imagine including crispy fried flounder, clams cooked in a white wine butter sauce, pan seared scallops and grilled triggerfish drenched with lemon to your weekly menu repertoire. Interested in a weekly share of your own delivered to Carrboro, Durham or Raleigh? Contact us for more information. We are excited about Core Sound Seafood being one of our suppliers and we hope that you will be equally excited about eating fresh, locally caught seafood and supporting our local North Carolina fishermen.

Parker Family Farms - Hurdle Mills, North Carolina

Welcome to Parker Family Farms. Here we raise terrific pork. Our farm is nestled between Hillsborough and Roxboro in Northern Orange County. We raise hogs on pasture, we have free range laying hens and also raise cows, small grains for cover crops and corn for feed. This farm has been operating under the Parker name for many years.

We strive to be good stewards of the land. We are committed to raising our four children, our crops and our animals in a wonderful, nurturing farming environment similar to how we were raised. Our children help feed and water the animals and with harvesting crops. They love to raise their own pigs, cows and chickens for 4-H and just for fun. Together, we strive to be good stewards of the land that God has provided and in turn the land and animals give back to make the farm a success.

This farm raises pigs from start to finish. The pigs are fed an all natural diet and are not given any animal proteins, antibiotics, or hormones in their feeds. The pigs have the freedom to roam in the open pastures and graze on a variety of grasses. Pastures are maintained by rotating the animals periodically and reseeding the pastures when necessary.

We adhere to the Animal Welfare Institute standards, practice humane husbandry skills and do not use antibiotics or growth hormones in their feeds. All products are frozen after processing and are packed in vacuum sealed packages. Ribs, chops, loin, sausages, liver, roasts, ham steaks (fresh and smoked), salted fat back and neck bones are all sold by the pound. All products are natural, no nitrates and no preservatives.

Savannah Farms - Snow Camp, North Carolina

Savannah Farms is a locally family owned farm in Snow Camp, NC, established in 1991 by Sam and Deborah Kiser. There are three generations living and working on the farm raising purebred angus cattle and running a poultry contract operation. Savannah Farms is named after our now 9 year old niece. Three years ago we began raising steers for a local meat market. We did this out of our own concern to have good quality meat for our own table and knowing what, where and how it was raised. We felt others would want the same.

All our cattle are raised humanely. They are raised on a variety of grasses being moved to fresh pastures as needed. We do not use antibiotics nor hormones. If it becomes necessary to treat an animal it is pulled from the herd and is not available for the meat program. All the steers are between 18-20 months of age. The beef is dry aged for two weeks as part of the process. The steers are processed by Key Packing in Robbins NC. They are also a family run business taking pride in working with local farmers.

Hillsborough Cheese Company

At Hillsborough Cheese Company we make both goats’ milk and cows’ milk cheeses. Hidden in the heart of historically dairy-rich Orange County, NC our small, boutique creamery focuses on the art of cheese-making. Our French-trained chef & cheese-maker, Cindy, handcrafts small batches of many varieties of quality fresh & aged cheeses using goat’s and cow’s milk.

We make primarily traditional European-style cheeses, but occasionally we experiment with different cheese blends to suit local tastes. Our regularly produced cheeses can be broken down into three categories: soft, fresh cheeses, bloomy-rind cheeses, and aged raw-milk cheeses (aged at least 60 days in compliance with US law, but oftentimes aged for longer).

We differ from other local cheese makers in that we do not maintain our own milking herds; instead we purchase our milk fresh from local farmers. The reasons for this are two-fold: first, by purchasing our milk locally we help support area farmers and continue our commitment to our local food economy. Second, because we are such a small operation we’ve decided to focus foremost on hands-on, artisanal cheese making rather than the added commitment of maintaining large milking herds. Check out some of the many varieties of cheese we make at Hillsborough Cheese Company.

Apollo Olive Oils are among the few Olive Oils that are certified both organic and extra virgin. They are raw, unadulterated, and 100% cold-pressed on the vacuum mill designed in Tuscany to preserve the highest levels of flavor, nutrients, and anti-oxidants. In fact, our award-winning oils average three times the polyphenols of typical extra virgin olive oils.

Apollo Olive Oil is a small, family-run business. Our pride is in producing flavorful and healthy olive oils in the finest tradition. We tend our trees with organic, sustainable methods, harvest by hand at optimum ripeness, and exercise great care in milling and blending.

Best Olive Oil Ever Tasted

Best olive oil I've ever tasted - and that's saying something because I've tasted a whole lot. This oil is green, spicy, pungent and invigorating. Be sure to pick up the Sierra one. I tried the Mistral as well, but Sierra is the one to go for. Worth every cent. Appreciate it straight, on its own, before you decide what else you might do with it. Heidi Swansonwww.101cookbooks.com

Using Apollo Olive Oil is like starting with a great wine. It invites you to organize the whole meal around it. It will never be just an ingredient. Its freshness, its complexity and its aromas--what aromas!-- take recipes to a different, unexpected level. Lynne Sanders, Bistro Aix (voted best French restaurant in London)

Carolina Bison - Asheville, North Carolina

About Carolina Bison

Located in the lush Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Carolina Bison raises its herd on top-quality grasses and pure mountain spring water. Our robust bison graze freely on hundreds of open pasture acreage, reminiscent of the original native herds.

Founded by Dr. Frank King in 1985, Carolina Bison is proudly one of the largest bison ranches in the Northeastern region. With a mission to improve the health of his patients, Dr. King began prescribing bison meat with astonishing results. As an alternative to commercial red meat, his patients commonly experienced more energy, fewer digestive issues, and increased immune function.

Dr. King’s son, Frankie King Jr. serves as Carolina Bison’s C.O.O while actively participating as Regional Director of the National Bison Association. Driven by the great history of the American bison, the King family is committed to educating the public on the endless benefits of bison. Securing the future for these impressive animals remains an important agenda for the King’s.

In keeping with Dr. King’s vision for optimum health, Carolina Bison are raised without the use of any added hormones, antibiotics or stimulants. The herd is highly respected and humanly treated by the entire team. We proudly participate in Animal Welfare Approved harvesting. 100% pure, natural, all American bison.

Carolina Bison Facts:

  • Naturally raised on top-quality grasses
  • Access to pure mountain spring water
  • No added hormones or antibiotics
  • 100% USDA inspected, pure American Bison
  • Animal Welfare Approved harvesting

Benefits of Eating Bison

Bison meat has almost half the calories of beef and contains higher levels of digestible protein. In appearance, bison is a richer and darker red meat. This is due to the high levels of vitamins and minerals and the lack of artificial preservatives, stimulants and hormones usually found in beef.
